Women in Binders

October 18, 2012 1 comment

“I went to a number of women’s groups and said, “Can you help us find folks,” and they brought us whole binders full of women.

I was proud of the fact that after I staffed my Cabinet and my senior staff, that the University of New York in Albany did a survey of all 50 states, and concluded that mine had more women in senior leadership positions than any other state in America.

Now one of the reasons I was able to get so many good women to be part of that team was because of our recruiting effort.”

Now the phrase “Women in Binders” from last night’s debate has spread all across the media and the internet but what is the true story behind this story from Governor Romney?

The true story is something completely different which unfortunately the corporate media (as far as I can tell) isn’t talking about as much as it being a really poor statement to make.

In 2002 a group of women that were fed up with the fact that not many women were in leadership positions started a group called MassGAP within the state government. These women contrary to what Romney said, actually went to the candidates in 2002 election (Romney being one of them) and asked them to sign a pledge to commit to doing their best efforts to put more Women in leadership roles. They presented both candidates with binders full of women that were qualified to be in these roles (they were agency heads, women in cabinet positions ,etc). As you can see what he said last night was a gross stretch of the truth, which has become an all to familiar recipe that Romney likes to cook up.

On that note Romney’s response to Obama’s claim that the former Governor wants to leave it up the employers to decide if a woman can get conceptions was completely false…That is unless Romney flip flops once again last night on this issue. Romney was for the Blunt amendment which gave employers authority to deny health insurance and Birth Control based on their own morals. Let’s also not forget that he said this “Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that.”

This of course would be a devastating move to poor woman that can’t afford the care and check ups (cancer screenings for instance) that are provided by Planned Parenthood.

In general the Republican’s stance on Women in this country is more extreme than ever as they are looking to overturn many laws that protect women’s right to choose, including having the power if elected to appoint two judges to the supreme court (that are against roe vs wade I might add).

On this topic I have to give Sen.Turner from Ohio some kudos for taking this issue and putting it back in the face of these Republicans by proposing a bill herself that would make it more difficult for men to get Viagra and other related drugs. With her bill men would have to go through mental and psychological screenings to make sure men are capable of handling the medication.

This is from Sen. Turner “I was just listening to some of this stuff that’s going on around the country and I thought, I just can’t take it anymore. Yes, there’s a satire element to this, and I think people learn from it.”

She has not had a vote on this bill or a hearing yet for it though..
